1851 Pattern Basket Hilted Broadsword
all Civil War swords, they were more effective during the early years of the war and as new modern weapons such as breech-loaders, repeating rifles and machine guns were introduced the sword became less effective and could only be used in close battles.
The 1851 pattern Basket-hilt Broadsword was standard officer issue in the Highland regiments from Victorian to modern times. It has an etched 32 inch blade with the George V cipher. The red basket liner and pommel tuft help to make this a most attractive piece. It was used at the beginning of the Civil War until both sides could manufacture their own updated and more functional swords that would be more effective and efficient in battle.
