As all swords used during the Civil War, they were more effective during the early years of the war and as new modern weapons such as breech-loaders, repeating rifles and machine guns were introduced the sword became less effective and could only be used in close battles.
The General "Jo" Shelby, who never surrendered, carried this style officer's staff civil war sword. It features a 33" carbon steel blade engraved with "C.S.A." He used a metal scabbard with black finish and brass furniture, brass handguard is engraved with initials "CS," and the leather handle is wrapped with twisted brass wire.
