Civil War Swords - Naval Boarding Cutlass with sheath
As all Civil War swords, they were more effective during the early years of the war and as new modern weapons such as breech-loaders, repeating rifles and machine guns were introduced the sword became less effective and could only be used in close battles.
The Cutlass was a standard naval sword. It had a distinctive brass basket and a 24 ½inch blade. A leather scabbard and belt frog were also included. It has become a firm favorite of the re-enactors of a piratical nature.
